Claude Code and agents · Coming soon
Give Claude safe access to your internal tool with an MCP server
You have an internal API, database or tool that Claude cannot reach, so you paste its output into chat. Instead of a demo server, you build one around your own system: read-only first, with input checks, tests, connection steps for Claude Code and Claude Desktop, and a rule for when MCP is the wrong choice.
The course: Build your first MCP server

This course is being built now. Join the early-access list to reserve the early-bird price and shape what it covers.
Joining the list is free. You only pay if you buy at launch, at the early-bird price.
If this sounds like your week
- You paste schemas, query results and API responses into chat so Claude has something to work with.
- Claude guesses at endpoints and field names it has never seen, and you correct it by hand.
- You have read the protocol docs and still cannot say what you would build first.
- You do not know what Claude would do with write access, so it gets none.
What you do now, and where it stops working
Today you copy data between your tool and the chat window, or write a one-off script only you can run. Copying works one question at a time. A script works for you and nobody else on the team.
What changes after the course
- A running MCP server that exposes your chosen system to Claude, starting with read-only tools.
- Tool descriptions Claude follows, so it picks the right tool and passes the right inputs.
- Input checks and limits that stop Claude calling anything you did not intend.
- A test for each tool, so when something stops working you know which part broke.
How it works: Read first, then write
- 1Choose the system and the first question you want Claude to answer from it.
- 2Start from the TypeScript or Python starter and expose one read-only tool.
- 3Write tool descriptions against the good-and-bad examples guide, then watch which tool Claude picks.
- 4Add input checks and limits before any tool that changes data.
- 5Connect the server to Claude Code and Claude Desktop, and run the test script for each tool.
What you get
- Starter MCP server project in TypeScript and Python
- Tool description guide with good and bad examples
- Connection guide for Claude Code and Claude Desktop
- Test script for each tool
- Video walkthrough of the build from empty folder to connected server
This is for you if
- You can follow and edit TypeScript or Python.
- You have an internal API, database or tool you want Claude to use.
- You have used someone else’s MCP server and want to build your own.
Skip it if
- You have never edited code. Start with Claude Code for non-engineers.
- You need company-wide sign-in and hosting for a shared server; this course does not cover them.
- You have already built and shipped an MCP server.
Before you join
- Is MCP still worth learning now that Claude Code has skills and can run command-line tools?
- Sometimes it is not, and the course says so. For a task only you run on your own machine, a script may be simpler. A server earns its place when more than one person or client needs the same controlled access to a system, and the course gives you that test before you build.
- What stops Claude doing something destructive in our system?
- You decide what the server exposes. The course starts read-only, then adds input checks and limits before any tool that changes data, so Claude can call only what you wrote, with inputs you accept.
- When it fails, how do I tell whether the server, the client or the prompt is wrong?
- Each tool gets a test you run without Claude. You confirm the server works on its own first, then look at the connection, then the prompt. Jay West builds checks like these into his own Claude Code tooling for the same reason.
- Is this out of date next month?
- The protocol and the clients change. The course is built on the parts that hold still: small tools, clear descriptions, checked inputs and tests. Each guide states the versions it was written against.
- Why not the free Anthropic course or a YouTube walkthrough?
- They explain the protocol, and if that is all you need, use them. This course is narrower: one server around your own system, with starter projects in TypeScript and Python, a description guide and a test script you keep.
