Get it out of your head
The capture habit precedes all systems
Jay WestHow to Think · 2 min read
By the end: One capture habit on one anchor you already have, so whatever system you choose later has something to feed on.
The idea
No productivity or thinking system works without a reliable capture reflex. The system is not the bottleneck — the habit that feeds it is.
You know this person. Maybe you are this person.
They spent a weekend building the perfect Notion workspace. Databases with rollups. A reading list with status columns. A project tracker with Kanban views and automated reminders. A personal CRM that would make a sales team jealous. Every template polished. Every toggle aligned.
An example
An engineering lead spends a weekend building an elaborate Notion workspace — databases for projects, reading lists, meeting notes, a personal CRM. Two months later, every database is empty. The architecture is pristine. The capture habit never formed. The system starved to death.
Where it goes wrong
Building elaborate organization systems before establishing reliable capture. You spend hours designing templates, folder structures, and tagging taxonomies — then never use them because there is no automatic behavior putting material into the system. The architecture becomes a monument to procrastination disguised as productivity.
Make it stick
Capture gives you raw material.
Do this now
Choose one anchor moment from your existing routine — finishing your morning coffee, closing your laptop lid, stepping out of a meeting. Attach one capture behavior: 'After I [anchor], I will open my capture tool and write one thought.' Do this for five consecutive days. Do not organize what you capture. Do not build a system around it. Just prove the reflex works.
