Keep the Question Log for five days
Jay WestOut of My Head · Lesson 2 of 6 · 4 min read
By the end: Five working days of every question that came to you, with who asked, how long it took, and whether it was a step or a decision.
One row per question
Every time someone brings you a question, add a row. One minute each, for five working days. The columns:
- Date and who asked.
- The question, in their words.
- How you answered, in a few words.
- Minutes it took.
- Step or decision?
- Asked before?
The last two columns are the point
Step or decision: a step has one right way and could live in a checklist. A decision needs your rule, your line, your exceptions or your reason. If you are not sure, write "decision".
Asked before: yes if you have answered this question, or one very like it, before. Every yes is an answer you are giving twice.
Keeping it going on a busy day
On your phone, do not open the table. Add one line to any note: who, the question, minutes. Paste the lines into the log once a day. Messages count too: a question in Slack, a text, a call, someone at your door.
You will miss some. That is fine. Five days of most questions shows the pattern; you are not auditing anyone.
Your downloads
The log needs nothing but a spreadsheet or a pen. The vault opens in Obsidian, which is free; it is easiest on a laptop.
